Backwards Looking Sunset
Every evening cars line up at Harlinsdale Farm
On a ridge with Western view overlooking its fields and barn
A BMW, a black SUV, two Hondas and a Jeep
they all look west toward the view of sunset bright and sweet
I joined that crowd this evening and thought I would look there too
Instead a sight caught my eye of even lovelier hue
While everyone stared ahead at those waning golden skies
I looked behind me to the East and found myself surprised
For there I saw in majesty a purple clouded bank
Of billowing, bold transcendency imbued with vibrant pink
No one seemed to see it, fixed on where they always look
But I could not turn my eyes away, my very breath it took
People often seem to see the bright prestige and story
They look when someone says here you will find glory
But stop my friend and turn away, look at the other side
There’s a treasure to be found although it often hides
If you change your view and see the world through Jesus’ loving eyes
The colors through which you see your life will lead to a greater prize
So remind yourself at the end of a day filled with goals unmet
Sometimes the best view in life is a backwards looking sunset
